What changes when converting GIF to WebP?

GIF uses a limited color palette for each frame. Animated WebP supports a broader range of color and transparency, and its encoding can represent animation compactly. That does not guarantee a smaller file in every case: noisy footage, many frames, dimensions, and quality settings all affect the result. GIF may also remain the more compatible option for older software and services.

Convert and check the result

  1. Select an animated GIF in the editor.
  2. Choose WebP for the output format. Adjust width, frame rate, or trim range if needed.
  3. Convert, preview the animation, and compare the reported file size with the original.
  4. Test the WebP in its destination before replacing a GIF used in an older app or workflow.

The source file is processed in the browser. The WebAssembly engine is downloaded when the editor first needs it; media files are not uploaded for conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Will WebP always be smaller?

Not necessarily. Compare the output bytes and visual quality for your specific animation.

Does this make a still WebP?

No. The editor encodes the selected animated source as animated WebP when WebP is selected as the output.

Can I use the result everywhere I use GIF?

Not always. Check the destination's current format support; keep the original GIF when compatibility is uncertain.
